How it works
Notes that both sides find helpful
Contributors write and rate notes. An open algorithm decides what readers see, and nobody can force a note to show.
- A contributor spots a misleading claim in a post or comment and writes a short note in their own words, with public sources.
- Other contributors rate it: Helpful, Somewhat helpful or Not helpful. They see the note, not its score.
- The algorithm looks for agreement across viewpoints. A note shows to readers only when people who usually disagree with each other both rate it helpful.
- Readers see it under the post, matched on their own device. Echobraker never learns what they read.
Why am I seeing this note?
Echobraker uses bridging-based scoring, following the open-source model X publishes for its Community Notes. It learns from past ratings which contributors tend to agree, then looks for notes that people on both sides find helpful. A note that only one side likes doesn't show, however many ratings it gets.
The label on a note describes how contributors rated it. It isn't Echobraker's own verdict on the post.
Statuses
- Helpful
- Rated helpful by contributors who usually disagree. Shown to everyone using the extension.
- Needs More Ratings
- Not enough agreement across viewpoints yet. Visible to contributors only.
- Not Helpful
- Rated unhelpful. Never shown to readers.
Published settings
Current values, labeled "V1 setting, may change". Every change gets a dated entry below and in the scorer configuration.
- Helpful needs at least 5 ratings, a note intercept of 0.40 or more, and a note factor below 0.50 in absolute value.
- Not Helpful: a note intercept below −0.05 − 0.8 × |note factor|, with at least 5 ratings.
- Small-group safety rule: while there are fewer than about 200 active raters, a note also needs at least 2 "helpful" ratings from each side of the learned viewpoint split.
- Scoring runs every 2 hours. A run that would flip more than 30% of Helpful notes is held for review.
- A note that suddenly gets a burst of ratings from brand-new accounts keeps its status until a moderator reviews it.
Changelog: 2026-10-13, initial V1 settings.
Who runs it
Reddit Lies runs moderation and infrastructure. It doesn't write or rate notes, and it can't make a note show.
Moderators can hide or remove a note that breaks the rules, and every action is logged. They can never edit a note's wording. Public pages show moderation only as "Moderator". Monthly totals are on the transparency page.
The rules for notes
- Every note cites 1 to 5 public sources. Archived copies on archive.org are allowed; removal archives and Reddit mirrors aren't.
- Address claims, not people: no insults, motives or speculation about who someone is.
- No doxxing. Notes that identify or hint at anyone's identity are removed immediately.
- Only checkable factual claims. No notes on personal stories, venting or opinions.
- Use your own words. Quote at most about 15 words of the original.
- 280 to 1,000 characters, plain language, no self-promotion.
- Don't act on Reddit because of a note: no voting, commenting, messaging or reporting on noted items.
Who can contribute
Contributors are invited, 18 or older, and live in the United States or a US territory. Everyone starts as a rater. After 30 days and 20 ratings in good standing, a rater can also write notes. Everyone appears under a random alias.
Removed or deleted posts
When a post or comment is removed or deleted, its note disappears. Echobraker never restores or displays removed content and stores no Reddit content at all: only the item's ID, its community name and the note's own text. If several notes on one item are rated Helpful, the highest-ranked one is shown.
Privacy
Readers send nothing about their browsing. The extension downloads the full list of public notes and matches it on your device. Contributors sign in with an emailed link; see the privacy policy.
Flags, appeals and takedowns
Anyone can flag a note. Writers of removed notes and people whose content was noted can appeal; a different moderator reviews each appeal within 7 days. Legal notices go through the takedown form.
Open source
The extension, API and scoring configuration are open source under the Apache License 2.0. The Firefox add-on is signed and downloaded from this site, not from a public addons.mozilla.org listing. The scoring model follows the Community Notes algorithm that X Corp. publishes under the same license. Echobraker is not affiliated with Reddit, Inc. or X Corp.
